XTO+J-C - what?

XTO+J-C
that's the name of the book I'm reading right now - subtitled An Authorized Biography, by Burt Chernow. We'll be getting it into our Museum Shop soon. It's very informative!!!

We've got tons of smArt speak books in our Museum Shop now - books by and about our artists (Ringgold, Spiegelman, Christo and Jeanne-Claude) as well as books by folks who are associated with our attendant programs - Hope Larson, Harvey Pekar, etc.

It's awesome - everytime I walk past the counter I see something new. Books like, Open Me, I'm a Dog! by Art Spiegelman - it's a great children's book that adults won't mind reading 500 times to their 4 year old.

tickets ARE on sale!

Tix are now on sale for the remaining smArt speak artists!

Go to the respective box offices - in person, on the web or over the phone - Diana Wortham Theatre for Faith Ringgold, or Thomas Wolfe Auditorium for Art Spiegelman and/or Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

See you at the talks!

new sponsor!

We're happy to report that WCQS Public Radio has joined in as media sponsor for smART Speak!

WCQS is in great company - see the bottom of the weblog homepage for our full list of sponsors, and please thank them when you visit.

website updates

I'm happy to report that with the help of our summer interns extraordinaire (shout out to Crystal and Mallory!) we have posted a slew of programs for Spiegelman and Ringgold on the site. We still have some updating to do - as you'll see - so check in regularly for confirmation on dates and times.

Also - and this is cool - each artist now has a page of suggested reading. Wait, that might not be posted yet but it's coming soon. Many of these artists are authors too, but suggested reading includes some critical analysis and biographies/autobiographies.
stay tuned and enjoy!

smArt speak: Asheville Art Museum's Distinguished Artist Series

The Asheville Art Museum is a proud recipient of a grant from MetLife Foundation Museums and Community Connections program, allowing us to bring four phenomenal artists to Asheville for our smArt speak: Distinguished Artist Series.

The Guerrilla Girls came on March 31st for a performance and a workshop. Upcoming speakers include Art Spiegelman on Thursday, September 11, 2008; Faith Ringgold on Tuesday, November 18, 2008; and Christo and Jeanne-Claude on Thursday, February 5, 2009.

We will periodically update this blog to let you know about upcoming programs and lectures. You can comment by clicking on the "comments" button below. Tell us what you think of the series.
